Thanks Corley, I know the thread.
Gary thinks the removed daggerboard and case might be the cause, but even then one wouldn't expect it to break with such a small breaking surface.

It is I agree unusual a failure of that type it may be cumulative fatigue due to the loss of the structural element that the daggerboard case provided. It's also a race boat that has been sailed very hard over the years and I doubt the original design calculations took into account such a long service life. I notice that Matty has mentioned on SA that the fault appears to have been in the aft section where the boat had previously been repaired after a serious grounding they plan to add a new shear web to strengthen that area.

It's not unprecedented either for example the ORMA Sergio Tacchini/Brossard broke comprehensively (and much more seriously) in very light conditions in Dubai. I never saw an exact description of the failure but it looked like the main beam and main hull broke together possibly under the mast step.

Scanning through this thread brings back memories.

One boat I didn't see mentioned was Amistad, a 25' Piver Dart built by Bernie Rodriguez and sailed by him in the OSTAR in, I believe, 1960. I sailed on Amistad after Bernie sold her to the Anderson's. A pleasant little boat to sail.

I sailed in the North American Multihull Championships mentioned earlier that were won by Art Piver, sailing the original Stiletto. She was a pretty boat and easily sailed away from us. I'm not sure that was much of an accomplishment. We were on a very heavily loaded Pi-35. A very slow boat.

    Fun thread.

OK, I understood it was pure neglect that broke up Brossard.

In the 1968 OSTAR Amistad got 17th in 48 days. Would be faster now with proper self steering.

    cheers

No, Marc Lombard ... but appeared around the same time as Adrian Thompson's designs. Started life as 72 foot Ker Cadelac 11 then later as Lada Poch 11 (sailed by Loic Peyron) had a high Bruce Number of 2.2 - there's a colour shot of the boat earlier in this thread. Peyron also cut the tri foiler down to 60 feet for an OSTAR.

    I remember Phil Weld.
At the World Multihull Symposium in 1976 he gave a magnificent talk about multihulls. The proceedings of the symposium were recorded on tape, but the fellow doing the recordings failed to record Welds speech, which was so good it should have been saved for prosperity. Oh! for opportunities lost. :(
