Another measure of competency is what tools would they bring?
This won’t be an exhaustive list, but here are a few ideas:
1. High end crimpers for small and large lugs. The big ones are like $150 or more. Maybe only need to make a couple leads, but the surveyor might not like auto parts store wires because they won’t meet ABYC requirements.
2. Electric meter
3. Weld Mount Gun and kit. You cannot drill through a s&g hull or wood hull, but wiring not in conduit requires fastening every 18”; generally. The weld mount equipment and glues make this work simpler.
4. Possibly supplying ancor wire. If they have some; your boss would be wise to let them supply it and any other accessory stuff like cable clamps or conduits, etc.
5. Bleeder kit if you go hydraulic steer. Kits cost like $200 and get used about one time.
6. An extensive array of hole saws unless you supply.
7. Label machine or method. All wires must be labelled to meet abyc. Heat shrink labels are a way to do it. There are others.
You can use this information to determine their competency as well. If you have to supply all these; they probably are not up to the task and you’d be better off taking it to a local guy for rigging.
As you can see; the biggest challenge is meeting ABYC; especially, but not only, electrical.
The best person would be ABYC certified. I am not for hire, nor am I certified, but I have a fairly extensive knowledge of the standard and will probably take the course next year. Anyone who shrugs off the standard is not your person.
Finding an accredited surveyor is also on your to do list. They may even know ABYC certified riggers in your area who do good work.
