hand built small craft are always inspiring to look at. I guess this is why so many people mess around in boats.

Hoyt, thanks for the pictures-that trimaran is really hot but no info on the BandB website. Do you have any links to details of the boats?

Wow! Thats great stuff-the guy has done a tremendous job on one of the finest small "beach trimarans" I've seen yet! Thanks for all the info, Hoyt. Too bad for their trouble but it appears relatively minor and the weather turmoil is almost gone now so good sailing ahead.....

No, Mosquito Magnet was not built anywhere near Hilton Head which is nowhere near the Outer Banks of NC. It was built in B&B's shop near Bayboro, NC about 15 miles from my home in Oriental on the ICW. The very late completion of the boat led to some problems at the start on Mullet Key and, with 1200 miles to go, Allan and Dawn took an extra day to work on the boat before starting one day behind the other boats. They are now doing well and we are looking forward to seeing how they complete the race. In order to complete the event, Mosquito is capable of being dismounted and portaged by the crew 40 miles over land in north Florida.

Draft is a really critical parameter and 2' as mentioned will keep you in the mud if there is a wind from the eastern quadrant (normal in Winter) in Florida Bay. Speed is important but to win, you must finish.

Mosquito is not the same boat as Mosquito Magnet. Check the departure times. Midday Sunday Mosquito was still sitting on Mullet Key Ft. DeSoto East Beach and didn't leave there until Monday morning. By midday Sunday MosquitoMagnet had already arrived at Checkpoint 1. As to where it was built, I thought Alan said it was built on the Outer Banks. It was very windy and I may have misunderstood him.
