    Hi all,

I'm looking for a trailer sailer project either a small one to build or something to restore/clean up. I don't yet sail so this is a project whilst I learn.

I found an ad for a Hartley TS17, part built project. I can't find any info on a TS17. I have contacted the seller for information on the plans. It might just be a typo.

Otherwise any thoughts on completing a part built project. I have built a few stitch and glue kayaks so familiar with ply, glass and epoxy.

Link to the ad on boatsales.

I couldn't find a rule that says link are prohibited.

    Welcome to the Forum Jeremy.

Re the Hartley (?) for sale in your link above, they mention the following :

"Part built Hartley Trailer Sailer. 17ft. Hull 95% completed. All timber to complete the project included - Marine Ply Aluminium mast. Including boat trailer - galvanised, registerable. Always kept under cover."

I was thinking that the hull would be a bargain on it's own for $1,500, as it appears to be well built - it is even more of a bargain if they are throwing in a mast, a trailer and additional timber as well.
How far away is the Seller from you?
If you are not at opposite ends of Australia then I am sure that it would be a worthwhile project for you to finish off.
If she is a Hartley design, then maybe she is an older and now obsolete model - on their website they mention a 16' and an 18', but both of these appear to have two chines, whereas the boat in your link just has one chine.

Thanks for the response and observation regarding the chines. I have contacted the seller and it's a 18ft boat. Trying to get more information and an image of the specs so I can confirm what it is.

Hi JeremyF, a Hartley 16 and 18 are both good boats despite their ages; 16's can be fully fibreglass now too, but ply build is still good, lighter, and easy to repair (finish). See if it has a centreboard included, a largish steel plate usually galvanised. I had a ply 16 and it was very stable, and fast, but I also looked at 18's for a bit more room for camping, (but heavier). Check for rot or water damage inside, down the centreline - it may be under cover now, but may have had a previous life in the weather. If the build quality so far is good, (check the glassing), it will be a good project. Trailers (esp . a good galved one) are nearly worth more than the boat these days.
Never seen a single chined 17 though. Did see something in a car yard - traded in - about 17 ft, single chine, similar looking to a Hartley, but wasn't one, but then the car yard said it was a Hartley after i said about the vague similarity. It wasn't one at all.
