The spinoffs from this will mean buisness for Canada--The United States-- and to a lesser amount Europe-- Good for you Canada for keeping your finances in order

 

I 'spose it makes sense to keep it in the country, if practicable. Here in Australia the navy pays top dollar for crap. The Collins submarine shambles a total stuff-up. A second-hand amphibious landing ship bought from the US navy that was a rust bucket. The list is a long one.

Canada gearing up for WAR ...

 

The steel work will be done in Canada, most of the money will go offshore to buy design and engineering, armament, electronics, software, engines, generators, gearboxes, shafts, props, and all associated equipment.........The deal is we borrow money from Germany to send back to Germany (and other Northern European Countries, the UK for one) as payment for a bunch of stuff we don't need........

Tad, my fellow countryman, don't dismiss the good news with pessimistic forcasts. We have the expertise to do the job and to do it well!

The navy and the military was grossly neglected for years. The North is opening up, we need the navy to put some people up there.

Frog-- the queen -- ???? other than being a member of the commonwealth we have little to nothing to do with the queen. The royal family are basically looked at as celebs. much like employees of the movie buisness. (Notice I didn't say "stars"). Contrary to what many people think Canada does not support the English monarcy financially nor subject to them government wise. It's more a historical tradition thats on the wane.
TAD--while there is some truth in what you say the positives far outweigh the negatives.
The main purpose of my post was to pass this info on to those forum members who might be interested in employment as there will be alot of design work involved.

 

What type of ships are they building ? Coast Gaurd or Navy ?

 

Both-- but primarly Navy from the public info given out. Also from what I can gather Irving run Halifax Shipyard will play the big role on this coast--Geo.

 

Dont know much about Navy, You would think that in the near future Canada will need a powerful coast guard to patrol and regulate shipping on its Northern coast . Hopefully oil pollution response is part of the new fleets capabilities. Cerainly sounds like plenty of shipbuilding work for your region.

I still don't undestand why you brought the queen into it--Even In England the tax support of the royal family is very limited to the point where they are more and more expected to cover their own expenses. If by that you mean some British companies will benifit, be that as it may it's a competitive dog eat dog world out there. I would tend to believe U.S. suppliers will play a big role in both the Navy and the coast guard comm. and arament gear. The Navy because it has to be compatiable with the recent purchase of our airforce fighter aircraft from the U.S. and the two arms of the Canadian military have to make use of common comm. and spares. The Coast Guard because the Canadian and U.S. Coast Guard are now to a high degree integrated in a common approach to patrolling North American waters. I.E. We have the right to chase and arrest the bad guys into U.S. waters and likewise the reverse. As a matter of fact some Coast Guard ships now have both U.S. and Canadian officials on board. Thus common gear and spares is beneficial right down to the sidearms.

 

I'm not sure why you would say that. The design of some of the ships has already been done, by Canadian Naval Architecture firms. Now the vessels will actually be built, and Canadian Naval Architects will work on the production engineering for those designs. The proposals for design of the Polar Icebreaker were due a couple of weeks ago, and the announcement should come out soon.

When it comes to electronics, Canada has some world class vendors of alarm, monitoring, and control systems for commercial vessels.

The Halifax contract is for combatant vessels, while the SeaSpan one is for non-combatants (Coast Guard, Fisheries, and the new Polar Ice Breaker). The number of vessels in each contract is similar, I believe. The difference in price is due to the armaments.
