I"ll start with this article on the pine beetle infestation and its causes and effects and then maybe we can move on to other areas of our environment that a combination of human activities has screwed up. My theory is that if we find ways to economically resolve these issues we might just begin making progress on some of them.

In a nutshell there are two major reasons for the pine beetles march to destruction.

One is fire suppression, wild fires have been suppressed for long enough that the ecosystem adapted to coexist with them is no longer functioning as it should, giving he beetle a stronger foothold.

The second is warming, The steadily rising temps since the beginnings of the industrial age have resulted in more favorable conditions. It takes a low of ~ -40°F for a period of about 30 days to kill off the little buggers. And we haven't seen lows like that in the effected areas for quite a long time. Hell this last non/winter has been dubbed "the year without a winter" in many parts of the west, although this was a weather event, it could easily be considered climate induced as on average temps are increasing, just not by what was seen last year locally.

So in the end its a combination of human activities that have screwed up the western forests. At this point, its either down the dead trees and try and make some use of them or watch millions of acres go up in flames so hot they sterilize the place. IE even the benefits of fire are made void by the changing character of the forest.

I've thought of getting a chipper and a pellet press and selling pellet fuel, but the price pr/ton is so depressed ( cause everyone else had the same idea ) that its hardly worth it. $130 a ton for fir, $170 a ton for premium hardwood.

Anyway the fuel source is there, and its cheap, ( which is why I think it would make a great fuel for a steam powered yacht ) so I wouldn't be surprised to see someone eventually making use of it. Its carbon neutral, but unless you burn it at the right temp, wood smoke isn't really all that healthy for you.

Nope, not me! I thank everyone who has given me good rep during last 6 months. My approval rep points have actually been about 5% higher than displayed, because I lost about 5% in negative rep.
I hope my posts both professional and outrageous, have been thought provoking.
Some astute members have suggested my more outrageous suggestions were high humor, or mind games, or a parable of how much could be made from a little, or just pure contrarianism.

To some extent, all of those are true. The main truth is I don't believe in catastrophic warming WHATEVER is causing or not causing, if it exists, for dozens of reasons.
Good sound reasons.
I'll recap a few below.

I'm sure those who BELIEVE in catastrophic warming, feel they are justified in their belief.
I hope I've encouraged some, a few, even one, to re-examine WHY they believe and exactly WHAT they believe.

The USSR collapsed and AGW began as a world issue, nearly simultaneously.

I haven't met a warmist yet, who believes in God. Not one! A little strange?
Warmists CERTAINLY have faith in things unseen!
Like the famous consensus. Ever seen a comparative list of numbers, total world scientists and total that are alarmists? Oh! Somebody TOLD you there was a consensus. You read it somewhere? I rest my case.

To every problem there is a simple solution, but invariably it's wrong.
Occams razor is a fine tool in theory science. Not in world politics!

TOO much of AGW propaganda is totally one sided. I don't mean they don't present the skeptic view, of course they wouldn't!
I mean they throw out figures without a basis of comparison.
Man burns fuel and emits X number tons of carbon daily. OUGHT OH! I'm worried!
WAIT em, compared to what? What's the REST of it? Size of the atmosphere? or How many tons of carbon are produced NATURALLY daily?

AGW can take the place of political divisions, and religious controversy, and patriotism, nationalism!
Do away with ALL that UGLINESS and STRIFE!
AGW! It's a BEAUTIFULL cause we can ALL get behind. ALL believe in!
Yeah! There's ALWAYS gonna be a few idiots won't get with the program. Non-comformists! Sociopaths! Ignore them for now.
This is a GREAT CAUSE! Especially if it CLEANS up our planet.
Of course, we can't continue living a richer standard of living than the rest of the world, THAT'S not fair!
The world can't absorb everybody living well.
So since they can't join us at the TOP, we have to descend to their standard of living.
