GF42 trimaran design

    Yeah Corley Lock did say to me that it was silly for people to go cruising in boats that were designed for racing with more than a wink at my living on the Twiggy.

    I won't hijack the thread anymore - I will be happy to see the boat sail and listen to the thoughts of the owner. As to my take on some of the best racer/cruiser tri design try this

    I pretty much agree with all your points about cats v tri's for cruising, but only above about 28ft.
    Below 28ft a cat becomes two sewer pipes and I think tri's are more suited.
    My ideal would be a smaller Cirro or Horstman, I dunno is a Horstman still relevant today ? Could the design be slicked up using ideas in the GF42 shapes ?

    The Cirro is a nice boat and I think that a good version would cost about $60 000. Easier and probably cheaper than building one. A few thoughts

    - Why 28ft? If you can go longer the boat will sail better?
    - The Hortsman has the shape it has to deal with the weight it has to deal with. Hull shape on a cruiser starts with the required load. Work out what you want on the boat - be very realistic - and then start the hull shape from the required volume to float the stuff. I would be absolutely rigorous about this as adding volume to a finished hull is really hard and designers are notorious (including on my first design) at underestimating the weight and therefore volume required. Then the boat floats low and goes slow. So no - you can't update something fat and wide with thin sexy shapes until you get rid of the weight.

    I had a chat to Greg about it and he indicates they would be good for at least 3 more uses. They are made of 1.5# EPS foam.

    Greg Lynn had some problems with the initial mast stepping and the mast fell and was broken (no injuries thankfully). They have managed to get the mast repaired and after restepping the rig have shared the first sail test of the GF42 trimaran here sailing under reefed main:
