I have a Johnson 1999/2000 25hp outboard on my boat,I am considering changing it over to a yamaha. The controls are totally mechanical (no electrics)
Would my present Johnson cables be compatable with the Yamaha cables?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Do you have OMC cables or generic with end adaptors?

Not sure of the difference.I fitted the cables myself. The outboard ends have a clip over cup with an adjustment thread.(external)

I am pretty sure they are different. Unless you have universal cables with screw-on ends that can be changed.

I am in North Manchester UK
My present cables have threaded adjusters and a clip over cup on the outboard ends.

This is "supposedly" what the 2000 25 HP Johnson cables are supposed to look like. No guarantee that this is what you have or if the schematic is correct

You need to provide a bit more info on the Yamaha, what year, model, hp etc

Then do the same search for "yamaha outboard throttle cable for 20xx, 25?? horsepower" and maybe get lucky with a schematic shown in the other link and compare

Here are a few optional ends from various manufacturers

If they are universal cables, that adjustment end can be changed for a Yamaha connector.

You are using OMC style control cables and they will not easily adapt to Yamaha.

I am much obliged for your input guys.
I think if I get a yamaha I'll buy the cables that fit.
All the best for crimbo from Manchester UK.

Hope you had a great Christmas and New Year mate. These are the style of cables to suit Yamaha controls. There are various manufacturers, but for a boat without too many radii, excessive load etc, the Teleflex 33C are a fair compromise between cost and reliability. They were the only ones available going back to when I started, and they went well, still do. If it is second hand you might need the terminal fittings if they stayed on the old cables, if new they will be supplied. (sorry - edited to add hyperlink)

I should also add that inner wire of these cables is a nice springy grade of stainless that is very useful to DIY people for many purposes (I have used it for TIG filler rod after degreasing). Cut one end off, retain the other end in a vice etc and pull the inner from the assembly.

Thanks mate, and I hope you have a good year.

The cables on the boat are the ones I fitted (Teleflex)(evinrude/johnson)
I've decided to get a new control box and cables if I change over to a Yamaha.
The original steering cable came out of the side of the splash well, and the height was fixed.
I've raised the transom height from a short shaft to a long shaft. So I've had to re-run a slightly longer steering cable
over the splashwell in order to connect it to the outboard.
I'm back in the UK now,but I used to be an experimental toolmaker at General motors Holden in Melbourne.(early 60's)
I still rue the day my parents returned to the Uk and dragged me with them.
    Have good life pal. Valvebounce.
