French bilge designs

Hello everyone!

I have a french built sailboat and have no other information to offer other than it is an alu hull. While cleaning out the bilge compartments I realized that THERE must be a design for water to flow from baffel/compartment to another and would like to have a better understanding of it's design. Is there anyone out there that knows about the "french drain" system or is it all the same for other boats as well, and more importantly, HOW it is supposed to work?

Here in Maine a "french drain" is a hole dug in the ground filled with pea stone to dump basement sump water into because the builder or excavator was too cheap to run the drain to daylight.
In your case they are probably limber holes to allow bilge water to flow to the low point of the bilge to be pumped out.
