FreeShip skiff design. The Shadow Caster

I have created an album of build images and also will post the FreeShip design file so it may be downloaded and modified. My skiff turned out exactly as my eight inch cardboard model after building three quarter scale models and adjusting the FreeShip design (ShadowCaster.fbm).

That is a neat boat. How does it go in the water?
Does one have to do anything special in Freeship to develop the flat patterns? I was not able to get that far using the file you posted, the program thought about it for a few seconds and then threw errors and shut down.

didn't check the file but each panel needs to be on its own layer and the layer settings need developable checkbox ticked.

 

I thought that looked OK but it was my first time trying it and could have easily been operator error on my part...

 

The boat handles great and is very stable. I designed it to be a single person skiff and to be as light as possible so I could carry it on racks on my F150. It required 5 sheets of 1/4 in. marine plywood and one sheet of 3/8 plywood for the transom and rear deck.
I am not sure if there are other supporting files needed but I will look.
I printed the the panels and then transferred the dimensions to a spreadsheet for scaling of the 1/4 size models.
All of the deck framing was added after the hull was complete. When the marine police did the inspection to assign a hull number the inspecting officer asked was I planning to take it in the Gulf of Mexico. I told him I promised my wife that I would build a boat that wouldnt kill me.

Here is a the final layout spreadsheet saved from LibreOffice Calc that I used to loft the models and the final boat. You could lay these out using the quarter scale dimensions and build your own scale model out of cardboard. It WILL produce the hull of my finished boat.

Play with it and have fun.

 

James, I am enjoying looking at the Freeship model and various 3D outputs but I am not getting the spreadsheet to make flat patterns. Could be operator error on my end. I took the total inch coordinates and let my CAD program 'plot' them as line segments. I know some curvature is missing on my end but I was expecting to the dots to connect so to speak. Perhaps I am understanding the spreadsheet incorrectly.

 

That doesn't look right to me either. The lines connected when I printed the panels.
