Hello all,

This is my first post here. I'm looking for some ideas, I want to raise the freeboard and build a splashwell on my 18ft panga. See pics below and an Ai image.

I fiberglassed a floor into the boat and added a console a few years ago. Now I would like to raise the freeboard and splashwell to make it better in rougher seas and prevent water over the transom.

I want to keep it as light as possible, this is my plan. Make a form around the gunwale 8 inch high, 4 inch thick and pour 2lb foam. Remove the form and glass over the foam, 2 layers 1708 tabbed into both sides of the gunwale. The glass would provide the structure, the foam as a lightweight shape. What do you think? Will this be strong? It shouldn't be too heavy I don't think. Thoughts?

This is another version of my hull Eduardono panga sells, with an added higher bow for reference.

The gunwhale takes a beating on boats, particularly fishing. You may be better off with a plywood extension and fiberglass over.

Be cautious about adding weight up high. The added freeboard may block some spray, but it’s still only an 18’ boat, and won’t be any better in big seas if it’s less stable.
Have you thought about an aluminum frame with fabric or other thin flexible material laced on?

2 pound foam over time becomes a waterlogged mess. Fiberglass over XPS foam would work but epoxy is more expensive.
