Throughout my life I had guns or acces to them.
    They empower you.
A noise outside that you wouldn't normally investigate becomes something you chek out... Why, because you have a firearm.
    You become "stupidly" brave.
This means you will put yourself in harms way, because you are armed.
    Not clever?
I am not unarmed.... If someone enters my home, I will defend myself. A gun is useless in a small space. If someone threatened my family....
It's unlikely to occur though, because of where I now am.
This is why I don't understand the need that Americans seem to have.
South Africa is a war zone for the inhabitants.
Where I am now is a world apart and I am glad.
It has taken me time to get rid of my "perceptions" of violence.
    I am glad I can.
That is what a civilized country should be like.
The polo where remove a1000 guns per yr from criminals.
    They are proactive.
Gun crime is minimal. Why- because Ireland has the most gun intolerance of many countries.
12 gun murders last year. Most drug related.
    Yeah!!!
Don't play a racial angle because they have all the guns now.
Why are " blacks"still nowhere in the USA?
Yeah - nobody voted for Obama.....

Petros -must say on the " boat forum"I have liked all your posts but here, you come across a bit different....
My " metal" illness is that I have used a gun.
It's not nice. Whether you believe or not. To kill a human being is crap.
I would defend my family - yes.
Wrong? Wait till you use your gun.
Rights and reality are not the same thing.
I would hope that on a "civilised" world, no one would have to use a gun. Or own one.
As for pd's racist **** - I marched against apartheid etc....
I now live in another country.

Why is my post irrelevant? We live in a global " village" - we all have to interact.
Americans are always shocked that the rest of the planet doesn't think that they are the best thing since sliced bread.....

Odd. I've owned guns since I was a child. Having one has never yet made me stupidly brave.... maybe because I understand they aren't the sort of magic talisman non-gun owners apparently think they are...

As I commented in reply to that list of rules for a gunfight that myark posted, the best gunfight is the one you manage to avoid getting into. Why should I suddenly become a fool just because I'm armed? Why would I irrationally decide to kill someone just because I have a gun?

No, my friend. Guns may make you stupidly brave, but they don't work that way for me. I've never considered them a substitute for good sense.

Troy - I respect your point but not everyone that has a gun is you.
    Unfortunately there are nutters too.
You have to accept that and here has to be some sort of control?
Bntii - live where I did before comment?

Understand the circumstances a person faces and how they respond before summarily condemning their actions or further describing their behavior.

this is exactly what i have been saying, it is not easy to shoot someone, most people will hesitate and that is when the crooks will act. i know if i had a gun pulled on me they would get it shoved up their arse if they were to slow. all this talk about defending yourselves with guns is fantasy. if your that scared just keep a lead filled piece of 1 1/2 pipe behind the door or in the car. no one gets up after being hit with that and even older people can do a lot of damage. my first line of defense is escape the situation if possible.

Have you ever had to defend yourself on your boat with a gun?
Where were you when it happened?

I don't carry a gun. Would I boating and camping in bear country? Probably.

Some people-bullies- may be stupidly brave or otherwise because of a gun. They will be that way if they have any advantage. It is against those that I believe I need to be prepared for. None of the anti-gun people will be there to defend me. If we are going for slogans, here is one from one of the Miami sheriff's cars: "When you are in trouble, call a hippie".
