Feathering?

    what are the proper steps to fill in large holes on a console via feathering?

    Grind the edges to a bevel first. If they are just cosmetic and not too large, you can fill with fiber filler (tiger hair or similar). Really huge holes may be better to first fill with plywood or structural foam.
