This a good idea? i do intend to travel the open sea on a schooner i'm designing(56ft). Would it be a bad idea to add a manual pump on top of automatic ones? thanks.

An extra safety device is rarely a bad idea.

Do you mean so the two act in series i.e. the output from the automatic feeds the input to the manual one?
That might mean if the automatic one clogged, you lost the use of the manual one as well.

    What exactly means ”on top”?
If referreing to actual height then the manual should be positioned lower.
If you mean in parallel then yes it’s a very good idea.

i mean like adding a manual pump on top of automatic in case of failure. Is there some things i need to watch out for?

Are there manual pumps within the range of human power and endurance sized so they can match the automatic pump flow rate for such a large vessel? Or is it just a case of adding something that exceeds the use of a cup or bucket for bailing?
