    Hello to all

I'am building a 14.5ft wood daysailor. The plans call for a "stopwater" a 1/2" hole to be drilled sideways through the stem just above the joint with the keel and behind the plywood sheathing. Does anyone know what the function of this hole might be?

    Thanks

The hole should be filled with a piece of dowel made from dry pine. The idea is that the dry pine will swell if water penetrates the joint and by so doing will prevent the leakage reaching the interior of the boat.
