outdrive water pump on i/o 3.0 alpha mercruiser?

hi ppl,
I was hoping to get some info on this problem we are having with our boat. It was working fine then it quit pumping the water out the exhaust, it overheats obviously. does any know of a site where i could get info? also we took the covers off the water intake holes and some big chunks of thick black rubber were laying in there. we thought it might be clogged up but we tryed again and still no water came through the motor. any suggestions are appreciated.

also i forgot.

any know of where i could find a disassembly schematic for the outboard part of the mercruiser 3.0 alpha? we are trying to take it apart and cant get the lower section loose.

sounds like you blew your impellor....

 

There are four bolts on the sides, one in the front and one under the zinc. They often get corroded very tight. Heat and pounding with a deadblow hammer takes them apart. Another technique is to unscrew the side nuts half way and use chisels as wedges to pry the halves apart. If you found rubber pieces, the impeller is broken. Some pieces are going to be clogging the power steering cooler and maybe the thermostat housing and the risers. The manufacturer recomends changing impellers once a year. Besides keeping the engine from overheating and internal damage, it makes you take apart the outdrive and service it.

 

The local marina can get you a manual for that drive unit. You can punch "ISBN 0-89330-005-5" into the search bar at an online book seller and this will produce the book you need (all Alpha and Bravo drives 1964-1992) or you can try "Seloc Publications" for the correct manual.

The impeller has given up the best years of it's life, the remains are in the cooling system, some of which you can see at the intake vents. This is considered a consumable part, just like air and oil filters. They wear out and should be changed out regularly.

Gonzo is correct about the drive unit halves getting stuck. The bolts can be fun also. Back them off and beat and shake then beat and shake again before trying wedges. You can do a lot of damage with a chisel.

Do yourself a favor and read the section on tune up and maintenance. It will save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars and your boat/engine will love you for it.

got the mercruiser and bravo repair manuals but what i like to find is a book that "Does me a favor in maintenance and will save me hundreds, if not thousands of dollars and my boat/engine will love me for"

 

Thank you all very much, we got it fixed now! it was the impellor and 2 of the bolts were corroded and very hard to break loose. but we got it fixed! Now I'm ready for Lake Waccamaw! thank you all again!

Par, i was wrong, seloc has sterndrives too. i got the white merc manuals, do you know if the seloc books have tips and tricks included?
