Can anyone help spec what filter material is used for engine room air intakes? It must be some type of material that is de-mist, colescence salt separating. To clarify these are the louvered vents that are installed in the hull to bring outside air into the engine room. Mine were severely damaged with age and a minor fire and I would like to source the proper material.

I have basically a starboard frame with some type of plastic filter media (resembles Hog hair or spun polly type filters) that mounts inside the engine room into a box that allows the separated water to drain. This is on a 45 sportfisher type. and pond filter media looks similar too.

similar to this is what I have -

    Hi ShaneB,

    Welcome to the Forum.

I would question the necessity of quality air filtration to your engine room.
You have air filters on your engine(s), right?

Sounds like you've already got dorade boxes to separate out water.

Yes the boat is equipped with dorade boxes. These “filters” are part of that by the oem. There are separate air intake filters on the engines themselves. I’m not finding any solid info on what the manufacturer (Silverton) may have used. I may just choose synthetic hogs hair if I can’t get a more concrete answer. I’ve asked in a few forums and groups with no real success. I do t see the need to pay a bunch of money eh to have a custom metal demister made when the oem filters look like they should cost no more than $100 for a roll to do both.
Any ideas who or where I may find a more concrete answer?

Hi Shane, try industries which use air filter media in bulk, like spray painter supplies, for the spray booth filter; motorcycle mechanics or suppliers, especially for DIY dirt bikes air filters; hotrodder supplies for custom made air filters; air conditioning place; oven/stove hood filter; rubber / foam supplier; must be others. Look for substitute material in a hardware store, like mats, or fabrics.
You could make your own fire resistant filter medium from an old woolen jumper. Anyway that's my 2 cents.

so far no definitive information. a roll of HVAC course Hogs hair, Merv 4 or 5 rating seems to be the only option that turns up.
