engine dies: 1989 70 H.P. Evinrude runs for five minutes, then quits

    The bulb has 2 one way valves and so does the pump. Either pump or the bulb can be dominant meaning one will flow if the other is pumping.

    To pump up hard it needs to have the 2 vaves working and a good needle and seat in the carb. Why you ask chicken skin?

    The exhaust line that runs the pump can get plugged. Mud daubers love to nest in the little exhaust outlet. This causes a restriction and the diaphram basically gets pasted to the pump wall and doesn't pump. I would expect it to be kind of erratic, timing wise. I've also seen water get into the pump exhaust on a small johnson from the internal water galleries. That was an annoying fix. Not sure what you have, couldn't find an '89 70hp. there is a '90 70hp though.

    :confused: I have seen mud wasps gets into the tell-tale and carbies, but the fuel pump is driven by pressure pulses from the crankcase. Nowhere for wasps to enter, unless they can push past reeds. :confused:

    Bulb

    I ask because the last time that it quit on me, the bulb would not pump up, I pumped and pumped but it would not pump up, in fact, where the gas line attaches to the fuel tank, I was seeing small amounts of fuel coming out of it.

    There is an arrow on the bulb. The idea is that this points to the engine.....
    You are not the first guy who installed it reversed.

    Sometimes the pipe in the tank head falls out meaning no fuel can get out.

    Level playing field

    What you need is to basically service the engine,clean and check the components as you go.If you have tried the ideas put forward on here with no success,then this will eliminate the faults as you procede.Start with a compression test,then a full service.If you are doing the job yourself,the cost should be minimal.The result will give you a more reliable engine that you can have confidence in.
