For those considering a basic electric drive system on a small, lightweight craft, those crazy Kiwi's have come up with an ingenious repurpose for the Fischer and Paykel Smartdrive - yes, that's right, the 3 phase BLDC motor you'll find in the bottom of your washing machine.

Anyhow, check out the details here: motors available now, controller coming although you can no doubt locate something on ebay.

The pancake form-factor might be an issue, might not, depends how you are setup for mounting space.

Heaps of info on the smartdrive motors and how to modify them on that site too.

Including all the good technical info for the electrical geeks like me :) https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzVDBix3S_qbNU1YWmZwTUFsQ2s/view

I'm considering 1 or possibly 2 of these units as auxiliary power for an 18' trimaran (working on the 2hp/ton principle for calm/sheltered waters only) of somewhat unusual design that I'll be posting about elsewhere.
