this is my first time having this project and what are things to consider for this conversion?

Do a very, very, very good structural survey and plan analysis before starting. It may be cheaper to build new.

There are several variations of split hopper barges, so the final configuration you want completely changes the necessary structure and significantly alters the loading conditions, stability, and buoyancy, which must be studied and ensured.
