    I am guessing that the origin of the terminology in marine use might have something to do with the engine being complete except for the transmission and driveshaft, particular to an inboard engine, to make it possible to drop into place. I think this technically makes it a bobtail motor vs bobtail engine but the two terms are probably interchangeable.
