    Really interesting technology, pretty neat. I would hope they'd be deployed only in areas far from shipping lanes, but nothing's a guarantee.

    Not good for the unmanned sub if it should surface in front of an oncoming 300,000 t ULCC. :)

    That is the buoy system being used to map the water temperatures and salinity around Antarctica. It is a vertically oriented cylindrical device which drifts with the prevailing currant. Many have been dropped to gain further information - it appears that the temperatures are significantly higher than expected. (Alarmingly so) They are not all that big:D as to cause concern...
