Fred, (direct) water injection into an engine set up for it isn't a con (again, provided the engine is actually set up for it rather than merely slapping on some aftermarket gizmo).

And it isn't trying to split small amounts of water by electrolysis using "spare" electricity from an alternator (I put that in quotes because I don't really consider it free).

Now, using a base station, solar or what have you powered, just so long as it isn't powered by the car or boat's engine (though I suppose if you've cogeneration recovering heat from exhaust that's different, but we'd be getting mighty fancy there) and storing hydrogen ("It just went boom!" -- Henry Blake, wearing a toilet seat, MASH 4077) is a different still approach that may bear looking into because the amount of hydrogen, as least base station sourced rather than cogeneration, used can be greatly increased.

All that said it seems like these browns gas doohickeys may possibly be of real use in an old engine to help scrub out engine deposits.

Probably won't help you scrub out unwanted guests drinking your beer ... maybe telling them you're storing large amounts of hydrogen under pressure on your boat would do that? (don't have to tell them it's in the form of hydrocarbons and the pressure is just the gas tank).

Now, producer gas! Hey, then we'd be talking.

While Hydrogen is mostly LPG produced - it doesn't have to be.

The Germans and British created Hydrogen for Zeppelins from heating steel, then pouring water on it. This creates 'instant rust', and the Oxygen gets combined with the steel, ;leaving just Hydrogen gas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lane_hydrogen_producer

Theoretically, Solar Power could be used to split water - thereby avoiding fossil fuels.

"Presumably the vast majority of that area would just be pools of water."

Perhaps the output of this Mosquito Farm could be sold as protein?
