Audi didn't do anything, they just bought a startup company for positive publicity and possibly to get a hold of some patents that could be sold to recover the marketing losses. The product won't be cheaper than oil-based diesel as long as there's electricity generated by fossile fuels. It might sell for cheaper at a gas station because it is likely to get some eu support and tax reductions for being "so green". There's never going to be enough wind&solar electricity to make all the fuel truely green.

It does appear you are correct on all of those points ch3oh.

But it is research and ever more gains in technology like this that hopefully will avoid us having to scavenge the earth in a manner we are now doing in search of more conventional oil resources like the tar sands oil (posting 4)

Sadly, it's presently way to expensive because of the faddish health foods industry to be viable as fuel.

Also, there is actually no delegated power given Congress to regulate either manufacturing or agriculture among the several States or commerce within any given State.

Infrastructure the size of Belgium is not simple or "almost here".

Presumably the vast majority of that area would just be pools of water.

We have some farms in Australia almost the size of Belgium, and of course the author of the quote would have distributed production in mind, not centralised in one location - other farming industries around the world would dwarf this, so it's well within the current realms of possibility.

Make the algae mildly narcotic and two things will happen: firstly the infrastructure will proverbially take care of itself and, secondly, Congress will ban it.

Also, just to express my deep cynicism, if it ever happened that a truly effective biofuel technology came on the horizon I predict it would split the American left for this reason: the only way that federal progressivism survives at this time, given the over-the-top lunacy of American so-called monetary policy, is because of the petrodollar.

I would predict that those most aware of the raw visceral power of the federal government, and most desirous to protect and expand it, especially those in government, will be fraudulently friendly to trumping up some issue with the biofuel as an excuse to limit it or even ban it. This could be nothing more than the suggestion that the availability of it will encourage more fuel use and lead to more global warming or pollution or whatever seems likely to get people upset.

Simply, whatever threatens the petrodollar in the end threatens American progressivism. To date no alternative energy does that. When one even suggest it may all bets are off.

The big break through I see it that it produces a fuel that:

1)Doesn't need to stored in ultra-high pre$$ure bottle$, and need all $ort$ of fancy hi-pre$$ure pump$. A more or less Conforming Fuel Tank really helps vessel or vehicle design VS those big LNG tanks that take up 1/3 of the bed of your pickup truck.

2)Runs the vast existing installed/engineered conventional ICE base, without all sorts of modification to use an trendy/iffy fuel source.

3)Diesel VS "OH THE HUMANITY!" of the Hindenburg disaster. No need for extensive re-education of Science Challenged consumers about "Hydrogen is actually safer than gasoline or even diesel, which are both basically NAPLAM. Think of Hydrogen as same as the gas stove in your home, but even safer, and unlike any similar flaming airline crash from several hundred ft up, about 1/3 of those on the Hindenburg survived."

Safe hydrogen storage in lithium hydride form is no biggie, but of course for the sheer bulk (lots more hydrogen in hydrocarbons than in any hydrogen stored at room temperature). People just seem to want to generate it on demand with "spare" electricity from their engines rather than use a base station.

Of course water injection (though usually a blend of water and alcohol) gets the benefits because water gas is produced, and more. But the engine actually needs to be set up for it on the fuel injection side to really get the benefit.
