    I mean really, should they?

Look at the Titanic for example...

******* thing wasn't iceberg-proof, obviously an omission in the SOR, Clive Palmer will have a clause inserted in his contract with the Chinese.

Should high rise buildings have elevators designed by professionals? How about the next offering from Boeing?

A professional shop has experience to spot errors, demonstrated proficiency, Quality Control procedures, certification.

I think you're going to have to spell it out what you mean, rather than subtext.

Should they what..and what's the qualifier/criterion of whether one should or should not?

I have never seen any high rise built by volunteers. In fact, each paid employee of the elevator subcontractor, are subsequently professional. The builder constructs to the plans, not the other way around.

Tom; you are messing with us....arent you? You did not just fall off the turnip truck, You know very well that the use of the Titanic tragedy is a wicked violation of the rules of logic. Thousands of ships, done by pro designers, are still afloat and doing quite satisfactorily. Of course the ones still afloat have managed to avoid icebergs, were built of the material that was specified ,and their skippers have not allowed their egos to displace their better judgement.

OK if you did that OP soon after tee many martoonies we will cheerfully cut you some slack.

Did you guys ever read the "should amateurs design boats" thread?

This one is just for fun, hopefully to get the taste of that one out of your mouth.

I think.....I guess.... Oh never mind.....

    It's a multi-facetted topic.

I was curious what response it would invoke.

Marketting plays a huge roll as does multiple contributers not always able to agree or even compromise equitably.

Then there is the veil of illusion some choose, or are forced to hide behind.

And of course liability and blame all mixed in with human nature.

Perhaps the next question should be what is a professional, that is, how does one define the word when it relates to ship design?

Unforseen tragedies always occur (weather, pilot error, etc.).

Q: Are you suggesting non-professionals attempt to design a ship such as the Titantic?

If so, no doubt we would be seeing many more tragedies. Just look at all the poorly designed/built or modified ferry boat disasters that occur around the world several times a year.

Aside from this, industrialized nations that design/build ships have come a very long way since the Titantic.
