They stay afloat but lose their maneuverabilty, and stability. I opened up a US coastguard inflatable once with a fishook and they left quickly, but remained afloat.

What would the mother ship be? Could you put a 30 cal. on the RIB?

With modern commercial sonar today, or even with higher grade stuff, how soon can you see a ship on the water on your sonar before you'd see it with your eyes (20/20 vision looking through bonoculars)?

Is there sonar jamming software? Do pirates often jam sonar? How fast do these mother ships go?

How fast do you think a RIB could go with two outboard engines; carrying 3 men, a 30. cal machine gun and some light weaponry?

He he... I don't think you need 20/20 vision to see with binoculars, the problem is rather you cannot watch everywhere 24/7. If there are other boats in the area, how do you know it's friendly or not ?

The sea is a big place. Even when you call for help, it may not always be close by, so if someone responds it takes time and organization to get to where you were. If the boat is out of international waters, it is also a problem to go into another country's coastal waters without permisssion, and being a military boat or hellicopter or whatever even the more so.

Even in international waters, if the crew is held hostage how do you get them freed and get rid of the pirates. The friggin marines you see in the movies are like our speed cops. Never where you need them :D

Inflatables can be quite fast, a 60hp one can probably do between 50 and 70km/hr. As far as I know a big ship can do around 60km/hr, but also cannot really maneuver so easily. A tanker can have a 60 / 80 km turning radius. It cannot swerve out to avoid another boat going to it's path. They do attempt to outrun the pirates but it doesn't seem to always work.

Most ships probably give up if an rpg7 or another rocket gets pointed at them. If they do get blowed up it's no loss to the pirates.

Also, I don't hink it's always a matter of the one big ship chasing the other big ship that deploy the inflatables to give chase. You often see 'fishermen' go about their business. When you look away and back again you may well look into the barrel of some gun. It's not only big boats that gets taken, it's everyone they can take something from.

It's RADAR (RAdio Detection And Ranging), not SONAR (SOund Navigation And Ranging). And It can be "jammed" with clutter as a direction and ranging tool but one would damn well know it. I doubt these guys are that advanced.
Yes, one could mount a hell of a weapon on an inflatable.
The pic of the boat you posted would deter any pirate but refueling would be problematic and near constant and that thing would flat take an ***-kickin' in any sea to speak of (and hold the middle-aged sweetwater sailors in matching jumpsuits, please. In fact, have a scene with guys just like those in a boat just like that one in a violent confused sea and out of fuel and it will steal the show!). The boat I'm imagining would be more self-sufficient, therefore bigger.

    of who? The Pirates?

Yeah, RADAR, not SONAR. For some reason I associated SONAR on the ocean. Probably because of whales...

I think the pirates will have a mother ship (still havent had any suggestions for what type of vessel this would be) and two other small inflatable or fiber glass boats that they deploy on attacks and raids.

I'm talking about boats to protect cargo ships from pirates. I believe that the pirates use what they can steal so you can use your creativity to come up with something interesting (from Mad Max to the Empress Louisa - it can make or break your screenplay. A hyjacked eco-tour ship might be interesting, repleat with a white cruise ship uniform with scrambled eggs for the lead pirate, etc.)

Hi there, how old are you? If you saw the Rambo movies you know I can fire a 30 cal. machine gun(rapid fire) WHILE HOLDING IT IN MY HANDS. You need to research more before asking us to help design your boats. Post pics and we can give advise--mother boats for these suckers are old fishing doules or something they have already captured from some sorry SOB

Once a long time ago in a land called Siam there lived a bad man and he had lots of followers who were bad people and killed innocent people. We could never find him as he hid so well. Finally we found him but he had so many bad men we had to hide.
We called our friend Puff who lived in a land called Hanele. Puff was a magic dragon and said he would help us. So Puff the Magic Dragon rose up into the sky and roared out fire from the heavens and killed all the bad men. Puff had a son and when Puff got old and died the son said he would protect us. He grew to be bigger than his father and could roar out much more fire and he has kept us all safe. We love Puff the Magic Dragon. OK kids time to go to sleep. SWEET DREAMS. Listen to the beautiful song as you fall asleep,,,,,,,,,,,I love Peter,Paul, and Mary.

hopefully one day we can meet Frosty and lift a few real cold ones. love the Hmong people or as the news says the Montenyards. I owe my life to them and to an Army Green Beret Cpt. whom I will not identify. The year was spring of 1962 long before anyone knew. Not the best of years for a 20 year
old pilot, but it had a happy ending.

Congrats - you found an obnoxious American in Thailand! When I was there it was almost entirely Europeans with twelve-year-olds on the backs of their scooters. Probably there to build hospitals and schools...

Yeah I know all my mates have kids, I dont , but they are lovely though,- but they do have to take them to school by law, motorbikes are quickest in the traffic.

    Funny how people see things.

It can be quite upsetting when my mates walk down the street holding thier daugters hand and tourists stare and even shout obsenities.

Imagine having to put up with that.

But yeah Europeans always ride with a big sign on thier back saying I AM A EUROPEAN --- easy to spot.

Thailand does'nt need more schools, private schools, is big buisness, a lot of ******* in Thailand are teachers ( yeah teaching a language they cant speak) but they are the dangerous ones since that Canadian phedophile guy finally got cought, Interpol chased him through laos Vietnam And Thailand
