I had a couple people who were visiting me and independently expected a war to break out globally soon - probably over oil..... The masses / population is getting "jittery".... I need to get out more often, and "sniff the air"...

ANZ has now covered its "losses" from USA investments and other failed mortgauges - still will post a profit they claim.... Further doom and gloom with USA reporting 18 million unoccupied homes vacated through failed housing loan repayments.... and very nice mini farms with new homes going for about $200.000....

powerabout, for the time being, don't piss them off, I gather it is sort of "fermenting" and will brew up if the pension cheques from oil sales slow/stop/reduce.....

    Yer true enough.
Referring to a previous post re security of oil one might conclude the US presence in Saudi is not protecting the oil but a select family of 17000.

Speaking of pension cheques where are the UK, France, Italy and Germany going to get them from?
Its not looking pretty in the those countrys for the next 15 years

An investment bank run by retail bankers ....

Merrill Lynch has said it expects to write off another $5.7bn (£2.9bn) in the current three-month period because of mortgage-related losses.

It has also announced that it is going to raise at least $8.5bn by selling new shares of which $3.4bn will be bought by Singapore's Temasek Holdings.

Merrill has already taken billions of dollars of losses and sold assets such as its 20% stake in Bloomberg.

Merrill shares fell about 5% in after-hours trading.

Much of the losses suffered by US banks relate to collateralised debt obligations (CDOs), which are complicated financial instruments based on mortgage debt.

Merrill has announced that it is selling CDOs with a face value of $30.6bn to a private equity fund for $6.7bn.

    Interesting....

Seems that we blew up a big short in the oil market...

This goes a long way to explaining the backwardation in the oil contracts for such along time.

Oh oOOOoo - - Glitches in new computer - couldnt get the printer drivers sorted, then the ATI card graphics drivers gave me convulsions (too new and linux drivers were unstable) and new nvidea replacement card is likewise being a pain to sort the drivers ...... & I transferred everything on to that machine and was part way to setting up my notebook for lovely lady - then had to be an "Indian giver" and take it back while the computer shop is sorting out the graphics - I want 2 screens.... well I was hoping for 3 or 4 but looks like 2 max at the moment.....
