I think the pictures are quite clear and from the BMW-Oracle website. There is only one picture that shows the mast canted(vertical) with the boat heeled.
The others were shown only to illustrate the stark difference in rake with and without the jib-not to in any way whatsover suggest a relationship between the one canted mast picture and the others.
The extra rake with the jib makes perfect sense.
Taken as a whole they illustrate the precise control that USA had over the wing....

I happen to agree with the points you are making about the rig flexibility, Doug.

The photos first posted did not make for really strong relational support of the argument, as there is a potential to easily misinterpret the angles of various objects when the points of view differ greatly.

I see that another image has subsequently been posted and it is, in fact, very close to the angle shown in one of the initial images; bringing the relational comparison into clear view.

Thanks for the effort in that regard.

    --------------------------
That picture was taken in Valencia, Race 1 ,according to the BMW-O website

There are other images that show mast cant but not the whole rig.

I think Alinghi didn't use their lifting boards because it would have reduced their maximum righting moment...

Here is another picture from Race 1 showing the canted mast:
