Safer cruise ship designs

    Cruise ships are safe, you just can not design for every possible emergancy. All you can do is design for most likely events. No matter what you specify, some cleaver fool will find a way to thwart the designers best efforts.

    If you want absolute safety, stay at home in your concrete bomb shelter and just watch videos of all the places you want to visit.

    BPL: if we talk about the Concordia, this thread will be about training crew better, common sense, ethics and not about safer designs. There was no failure of the vessel, just human stupidity and immorality.

    Public perception from the Concordia disaster could make increased seaworthiness and safety margin a selling feature for future cruise ships.

    'Damage control' will be a merciless description of the human element in the CC disaster.
    Safe ship-human error.

    Damage control will then have to perform the interesting trick of convincing passengers that the human element is not a risk....

    The most important safety device on a ship is the mind of the commanding officer. Without that alert and in good working order the other gadgets become insignificant.

    The standards to which these vessels are built are quite adequate. SOLAS calls for a very high level of structural fire protection, flooding prevention, watertight bulkheads, life rafts, safety drills, watch standing standards, etc.

    Any professional here will know that when building, working on or supplying product to a cruise ship there are a great many t's to cross and i's to dot, all involving safety.

    As an example if you were to take a look at whats involved in an A-60 bulkhead you would know that safety on these vessels is taken very seriously.

    Modern Cruise ship safety records are excellent, especially when considering the millions of passengers carried each year.

    Unfortunately, you can't fix stupid.
