Old plans/design question

    Okay, so my friend and I have decided to go ahead and go into business building sailboats. He is a widowed retiree who loves to build sailboats and I have a degree in management, so it seems like a good pairing.

    My friend has already found one prospective client whose dream boat hasn't been manufactured since 1976. The question I have is, if I want to make my client happy by building this particular boat that he wants, how would I go about doing that? How do I get my hands on a 40-year-old set of plans? Or, if I can't get the original plans, what would happen if we just reverse-engineered the boat from existing specimens? What intellectual property concerns might there be?
