    winch as propulsion

....as opposed to Wench as propulsion, which is another thing altogether :)

did you find the winch overheated after use? I ask this because some of these things have a LOT of torque but relatively short duty cycles, often measured in seconds, though I suppose using the motor as a drive for a paddlewheel would put very little comparative stress on it. I ask because I'm shopping around for a drive system for a somewhat larger sternwheeler, and the winch idea--already geared down and weatherproofed--seems a natural one. How did you attach the paddles or shaft to the winch output?

DC motors, controllers and drives are common. You have many options other than winch motors. Google DC motors. You'll get tons of input. Right! Winch motors are wound for big torque not speed or versatility. They are not electrically efficient for longer runs.

    winch as propulsion

Messabout, with paddlewheels, speed is an enemy. Anything over about 60 rpm and you're cavitating like crazy and losing propulsion. The winch motors are geared down, which is a plus. I am curious about the duty cycle though.
