I would like to use an inexpensive AIS receiver on my boat, and don't want to pay for an expensive splitter.

I am happy not being able to use both the ais and vhf at the same time with my one masthead aerial.

Could I not just use an inexpensive coax switch when I want to use either the ais OR the vhf?

    Thanks,
    Roger

A cheap switch will likely be noise, degrade the signal and probably won't last long. Your life and safety may depend on the VHF or AIS functioning. There are other, non-critical, areas to save money on. A splitter costs about $65.00. How much are you saving with a cheap switch?

I have not a seen a splitter as inexpensive as that - usually $200+. Can you point me in the right direction?
    Thanks,
    Roger

Thank you. I had seen those but thought that I would need a "marine" product. This is indeed a better solution.

They don't need to be completely waterproof if you install them below decks
