Enduring professional sailing teams and events have grown twofold in the decade since that race, but there had not been an all-female team since then until Team SCA signed up for this year’s edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, a 38,789-nautical-mile around-the-world event.

Seager, now Abby Ehler, and her crewmates Carolijn Brouwer and Liz Wardley are the only women on the team who have competed in a Volvo race before, but sponsors and team managers have invested in the goal of creating a competitive women’s team with a long legacy. SCA is only the fifth all-female team to compete in the 40-year history of the event, formerly known as the Whitbread Round the World Race...

Most professional sports have separate leagues or divisions for men and women. The Volvo is one of the few endeavors where the door is open for mixed-gender competition. To eliminate typical strength deficits between SCA and the fleet, the race has allowed the women to carry three extra crew members, a total of 11, to tackle the rigors of lifting and trimming sails...

According to Vicky Low, Team SCA’s media manager, 350 women applied for the team, and 50 trained at the team’s base in Lanzarote, Spain. Among the 14 selected are sailors from Britain, the Netherlands, the United States, Australia and Switzerland. The top female ocean racers in the world are on the team, including two who competed in the Vendée Globe, a solo around-the-world race. But there are also several Olympians who are new to ocean racing...
