My latest project.

Started this before Thanksgiving and have worked on it
pretty steadily.

It is a 1935 Taylorcraft model B, 40hp. It has a 52 1/2"
wing, 36 Thunder Tiger, 1.2hp and weighs just under 4
pounds.

There is still a bit to do, add the cylinder heads and some
more decals. The engine has four tanks of fuel through it
for break-in and it is purring like a kitten. It is grossly over
powered, by about 100%.

The plans came from a 1942 magazine and I added the
R/C stuff.

This is roughly what it is based on but this is
showing the 65hp version. The 40hp is a flat
head engine.

BUT....
keep the pics coming because we like it. Ive been threatening to get into RC gliding for many years now, the guys at home do a lot with bungy launching and that looks like awesome fun. I think Ill crash a few of those before I get into power planes.

Heres a Bonanza I did about a year ago. Alot of fun and a good learning project!

 

I have been building them since the early 50's, started R/C in '53.

I got out of it about thirty years ago and since I am retired I decided
to get back in it.

This one took about three months to do. It was a scratch build.

I am working on a Goldberg Anniversary Cub now. No rush project.

We won't have nice flying weather for several months.

The wife has decided she wants to do one so mine in on the back
burner for a while. Got her started this morning. It should take her
a week or so to do hers. Small rubber band job. I won't let her use
the band saw so she is doing most of the cutting on the scroll saw.

She has one side of the fuselage done and it looks pretty good.

Thanks! I had allot of fun building it. Once I got started it was like I couldn't stop. I think I would like to try my hand at building an RC yacht next. Seems like fun.

Please post some pictures of your other projects as you have them. I love seeing what other people are up to. This was my first. I think it was worth it.

just over nine feet bottom of fin to mast head,

Three years in the build. Carbon fiber over ply hull. Fin is 1/2"
cold roll steel. The finish is 40 coats of pearl white lacquer.

Launch date Aug 20 1990. Through careful work and planning and
the Grace of God it sat dead on the design water line first time in
the water.

I have three sets of sails, from heavy air to lite breeze. I have a
spinaker but I hate to have to go chase it down as you can't turn
around with it up.

The rig in the picture was just to get it launched, I have redone it
all in true scale with sail slides and real turnbuckles. It has all stainless
rigging.

It is a fully licensed and registered vessel. It was originally insured by
Lloyds of London for $20,000 to establish value. It goes to the lake
several times a year.






The boat was christened by a local priest in an all day ceremony
including music by the sixty girl choir from the Free Baptist Church
from Shamrock Texas ending in a fish fry that evening.
