I may just be having a brain freeze, but can anyone recommend off-the-shelf or DIY solutions for a latch for a boat hatch that can be opened and closed from inside or outside? I can only seem to find solutions that work from one side or the other, not both. Thanks!

Maybe a specific example will jog some responses.... In a setup like this one (a sketch by Don Elliott of a proposed modification to a Bolger Storm Petrel), what sort of secure latch or latches could you use that would be operable from inside or outside?

I don't know what kind of latch you are looking for, I bought the one on the pic which can be opened from inside (its outside is well known I think). I bought it online from China and used it not yet.

Thanks, Guenter. I am, of course, familiar with that style of latch. Do you mean that yours has an additional lever for opening from the inside?

Not a tilting lever as the frontside has but on the middle of the left side (pic) the is a little bar which is to slide the latch nose against a spring to open the latch.
(Sorry, I don't know the proper words, I hope what I wrote is understandable regardless.)

Thanks, I see what you mean, but that's probably not what I am looking for.

I once saw a traditional schooner with custom double hatches. One hatch set on top of the other. Or a hatch that dogged from the inside, set in a ring that dogged from the outside.
