    It may be a case where a PLB would have been useful (as backup for an epirb).

    Totally concur. Redundant day/gps tracking devices are no question good planning. With the rough seas one can only imagine their fate. Epirb signal likely lost and the search called off. Needle in a haystack. Hopefully a passing ship spots them and they have sufficient stores to survive. A huge sea bag of survival food, water, etc.

    All we can do is hope & pray.
