I heard that it was likely Herr Eshoff or Herr Eschoff and corrupted in english. Any truth to that. Halsey pronounces it Herresoff.

Sorry, the roots are in Germany yes, but it was not Herr Eshoff, it was Herreshoff:

Halsey was nearly right, it is spoken Herres hoff. Was not bossy but here is one telling the world that he has the only recipe of baking bred, but does´nt know the name of one of the most respected of his profession.

Even my wife enjoys Nature of Boats and set about calculating the Hp of her Laser dinghy. I used the prop calcs to work out my prop size and my size tallied exactly with 4 propeller manufacturers. Great book.
