Several people each year die of bubonic (or pneumonic) plague in the USA each year.
There is a large outbreak in Madagascar presently. At least 60 people died last month, IIRC.

Nope, It is still quite common. Just easily treated nowadays. Everyone in the Western US is well aware of the risk associated with sick and dead rodents.
