    Hi everyone,

I'm in the planning stages of building a small ship and need some advice on materials. My goal is to balance durability with weight to ensure the ship is both sturdy and easy to handle.

I’ve heard good things about composites like fiberglass and carbon fiber, but I’m also considering traditional woods like oak or mahogany.

What materials have you found to be the best for this purpose? Any recommendations on specific types or brands, and how they compare in terms of cost and performance would be greatly appreciated!

Does the ship design not specify materials? I would consider a small ship something around 180 feet (55 meters). At that size the weight won't make much of a difference is how much work it takes to handle it. You should define the kind of use it will get and in what conditions before deciding on a material.

Gonzo is correct in that the Statement of Requirements drives the choice of hull material. But as a general consideration, steel is really the best economic and environmental choice for a "small ship". Easy and cheap to fabricate and maintain, fully recyclable, there is a reason it is the most common shipbuilding material.

@starcmr can you tell us a bit more about the small ship that you intend to build please?
    How big will she be?
Do you have any drawings, or even preliminary sketches to show what she looks like?

Your previous posts on here mainly relate to building a dinghy and a deck outside your house, so no clues there as to what type of vessel your 'small ship' is.
