Becoming a Manufacture

    Do anyone know how would i register with the US Coast Guard for a HIN im wanting to sell my boats and unfortuantly it is illegal to sell homebuilt boats out of state with a Homemade HIN.

    Try the USCG website and look for the Office of Boating Safety. The number used to be (202) 267-6894. It has been a few years since I spoke with them, so the number may have changed. Also, if the boats are under 20', make sure they meet all the requirements, especially the ones about flotation. You don't want to have to recall everything you build in the next few years.

    Lastly, make sure you get the instructions on where to put the HIN as there are a couple different places it MUST go. One has to be hidden from view in order to help track stolen and abandoned boats. Good luck.
