Barge to carry a single pick-up truck

I need to read it from the beginning. But it's a rather strange horizontal use of timber for build.
 
It is a barge meant to carry what folks will pay to have carried. Unloading is likely to be by 6 ton offroad forklift, so every square inch or centimeter of deck may have a 2 ton rolling load pass over it. Relatively easy to spec hard points. Less so to take any load, anywhere. A point load that is easily within displacement capacity can place massive hogging or sagging or torsional loads. The deep grid transfers all loads throughout the structure pretty efficiently. And it's Canada; all the lumber for this will only cost €6500. The epoxy, all 600l will be twice that.
A carefully designed, optimized structure will cost more in design fees. Save some weight, certainly, while taking longer to build, with more expensive skilled labour, and requiring equipment to move heavy steel components.

I may in part agree, but your prior comment is not much of a contribution as much as it is silly. Noone cares if you can build it with less 2x4s. John never made a claim this design was ideal as much as it was practical.

Consider a double planked forward bow section 21” high. It would use 12 2x4s versus 14 stacked. So, your contribution to the forum is I could have done that with 2 less 2x4s. Or, I would have done it with 6 2x4s and broke it on the boulders on the shore unloading?

Or I can build it with less using custom engineered web trusses, but I don’t have the specs and the stainless steel truss plates. Really?

Am I contributing to the forum with my comment? Use it.

Hardly, my opinion, mostly factual. And if someone doesn’t ask themselves if they are contributing; then the forum degrades into polemics.

Next time you post a solution, I’ll make sure to respond I have a better one.
 
I thought the point of a forum was to exchange views.
But if it's supposed to be "watch and like," then fine.
Conversing with AI is more interesting.
 
There is a balance in all things. It would probably be better received if you replied showing how you did better (with some calculations/drawings/figures) instead of only saying that you could do better; that way instead of it coming across as criticism, there can be more interesting discussion comparing the two solutions, talking about how your solution is better and what trade-offs are involved.

I think you're the one who's missed the point. As far as I know, I haven't suggested anything, neither a better solution nor anything of the sort. Of course, I have my opinion on how I would build that barge, but I haven't said that the way it's being built is a problem and that, therefore, a better solution was needed. I don't know the circumstances surrounding that construction or the tools the builder has at his disposal; you're right, that's why I haven't intended to make any "contribution." What made you think that was my intention? You see, you're the one who's missed the point. I only referred to a comment that I found very relevant: "But it's a rather strange horizontal use of timber for build."
I know perfectly well that everyone builds their boats as best they can.
Now I do want to make a "contribution": I believe that anyone can say what they want, within the limits of the forum rules and the rules of courtesy. No one is obligated, if they participate in a thread, to offer a better solution to the problems raised. Or do you believe that if I don't have a better solution, I can't intervene (contribute, as you say)?

I am happy to explain the reasoning behind this approach.

Consider a sheet of plywood. It would not handle design loads very well if, say 2cm plywood had a 1cm ply each way. The longs and lats in this structure each carry their own loads, out to the edges of the structure, with no weak points or stress concentrations allowed. To this end, a large number of thin layers works best. Wood laid vertical makes it impossible to carry loads in a lat, through a long w/o interruption. Or vice versa. The width or siding of each lateral and longitudinal is more than global forces require, but allows more bonding area, so it all acts like a finger jointed assembly.

Well no, actually. TANSL, you seem to butt heads with folks a couple times a week, so normally it does not accept it.

Your comment about laying lumber flat I did not take as a criticism, but rather an inquiry. A perfectly reasonable observation, I am happy to discuss.

I generally would not mind Montero's question about doing more with less. I was already cranky. But lets get back to talking about how great boats are.
 
I have much more interesting problems to solve, e.g. making so-called unrealistic projects more realistic .
 
I used planks to construct the boat's bottom, but always vertically, taking advantage of their natural ability to withstand significant bending forces. Combined with minimal amounts of epoxy and glass, this created a relatively light and strong structure.
