    For a one-off plug:
    - MDF board cut and power-planed to shape, then sanded with 60, 80, 120 grit
    - Drywall compound or PolyFilla to smooth out any cracks or holes
    - Shellac or cheap varnish
    - Soft furniture wax
It's a cheap and effective combination.... doesn't leave a mirror finish, but a bit of finish sanding on the final mould takes care of that. For a re-usable plug one might want higher quality finish materials, but I haven't needed to do that yet.
