hi guys. im new to the forum and was wondering if there is any type of education material (entry level) where someone can actually do design work along with reading and maybe some type of software to go with it. sort of like a design as you study so that you have actually created something at the end of the material. ive google'd and looked around but cant seem to find anything, and maybe for obvious reasons, ha.

    any help would be appreciated.

    thanks folks!

I spoke with them a year or so ago and I considered it but its a little much to bite off for someone scouting out the industry. most everyone has recommended them and if i decide to go all in i would most likely sign on with them.

While there are how tos' for use of a specific program to do a specific task, you really can't sum up the whole design process in a 15 min to 1 hr video. Without full up education courses, Kinney's 8th/1983 edition of Skene's Elements Of Yacht Design does walk you through the design process for the "Pipe Dream" sloop in the days before PCs and AI. Used copies of this book are not too rare or dear.

Principles of Yacht Design is a good overview of boat design. Basic high school math is needed. It is based around sailboats but overall is directly applicable to a wider range of boats.

There is also the question of what is meant by "design". Creating a reasonable looking hull shape, or working through tradeoffs while satisfying requirements?

Just wanted to make an update to my post above and confirm that the online course Sailing Yacht Desing 1 has been just released.

    This is the link:
    Sailing Yacht Design – 1 https://navalapp.com/courses/sailing-yacht-design-1/

The course is an introductory course and covers the main aspects of the design of sailing yachts: theoretical fundamentals, yacht modeling, hull and appendage resistance, sail forces calculation, stability issues, and velocity prediction programs. The instructors are both Naval Architects and are currently teaching several courses related to ship dynamics, stability, fast craft. and sailing yacht design at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.
