All I can say is WOW!

If speed increases in proportion to the square of the HP (accepted rule of thumb for ballpark speed estimates in some circles), all that fuel-sucking would make the 25 knot 500 HP twin engine RIB go maybe 50 knots? I suspect more like 35 knots max with all that drag.

A pair of high-revving turbo diesels with surface drives would make that RIB really fly. Of course, as a smuggler boat, it's planned to be expendable, so cheap power is the likely goal.

Made some rigger's day, though.

 

Pity the sucker who has to carry the fuel tanks for those babies........

wot shortage fuel, wot glabal warming, really thsi sort of thing should be stopped, limits on power for all boats. thats my opinion, anyways how can one tell if it's real? where would the tankage be?

Ah, the memories!

Back when Don Johnson starred in "Miami Vice" , I worked for a company in Miami that specialized in rigging highspeed offshore powerboats. Since I was a Cracker, I got assigned to our "special" customers who showed up in brand new Magnums etc wearing Madras-patterned Bermuda shorts, white tees, straw cowboy hats and chew firmly between cheek and gum. I would install shockproof radar and radio, steering tie rods, etc. Normally they would be back in a couple of weeks with the engines loose and bulkheads cracked and a brand new Cigarette ready for us to transfer the electronics to the new boat. They were big tippers, often in kind, because they relied on us to install fake registration numbers and stickers on the hull. Every now and then they would go for a 28 footer with 4 200hp outboards to change the profile. The 4th engine made the props too close for best results, but were still better than three. The spacing in the RIB would work, but they could have removed two engines and barely noticed the difference.
As mentioned earlier, these were not low profile boats, and many an innocent macho man was stopped, and if lippy, was treated to a morning of watching the CG strip search his boat. By the time "Miami Vice" went off the air, the smart money had gone into 40-60ft motor yachts cruising up the Intracoastal at night dropping off packages to be retrieved by fishermen in small runaboats.

 

I laughed at the reports of drug smuggling submarines. These guys are going to have their own navy soon. Anyone for any pics of the subs?
