Just a general discussion about marine alloys

Below. In the early 2000's aluminum boat manufacturers had a serious issue with 5083 alloys with exfoliation problems. Lawsuits were plentiful and settlements very large.
This gave a bad reputation for 5083 but it was found out later that a manufacturer of this plate had changed the production process which made their 5083 exfoliate and was also prone to cracking.

That's not correct. There has never been an issue with 5083. It is related to the temper and the understanding of what the temper is, and means. And in that the one and only mill, changed their process that did not allow the magnesium to be evenly distributed in the alloy matrix, as it should be when hot rolled. One mills changes does not equate to a bad reputation, except for the mill.

H321 must always be a marine grade with an ASSET test cert. Nichols brothers etc..didn't realise that H321 was not a marine garde temper. Another reason, inter alia, why H321 was never selected in the EU/Australia. It must be requested for the ASSET test. H116 is marine grade.

This has all since been changed to ensure any H321 is also required to pass the ASSET test as standard.

5083 has only recently been widely available in the US. Whereas, it has been the default alloy in the EU/Australia for decades.
