Does anyone have any experience with recycled plastic lumber? I am
thinking of using it for rubrails,3" X 4" size. I know it will not be
pretty but it may be very functional and tough and attractive in an
    industrial way maybe.

I used it to make a fence in my yard cause I didn't want the maintenance. I used 4x4 posts and 1x6 boards. It looks exactly the same as when I put it in 3 years ago, no fading or any other visible change whatsoever.

You can order it in a wide variety of sizes and colors. I'd think for a rubrail it would be pretty good stuff. I ordered mine from www.epsplaticlumber.com, but there are others out there also.

I considered using it for rub rails but rejected it on the basis of cost. I could get the same size pieces in white oak for five USD for a 1x6 x14feet. The plastic bends easily and wears well on residential decks.
