For plugs, I used to use regular automotive products, Bondo, enamel primers and hi-build primers and regular 1 part enamel paint. I think it was enamel, but it was just the 1 part paint for painting cars, trucks, tractors. That left a new car shine that I waxed 5 times and then PVA. This was using polyester for molds and parts.

I've also used the small, cheap spray can paint from Lowes etc with wax and PVA.

    Finishing plugs

I used to just use a couple of coats of polyester resin, use as many coats as you need to build up the thickness.
put them on in quick succession as they gell with some wax in the last coat. Wet & Dry and then polish, works a treat, you can get as high a gloss as you need.

For boxes, make your plug from glossy laminex coated mdf or ply.

Use plasticine with a suitable size drill bit in the corners for your radii.
