Yeah but the underlying REAL price inflation rate is closer to 10% so he is actually losing 7% at 3%. Consider that the Fed is pumping $$$$ at +16% PA at the moment and figure out what that means. Bear Stearns almost crashed the system the other day... wake up a smell the coffee... this is huge and the story is only just starting to unfold, subprime was the kick off, the entree, the horse's doover :D Be afraid, very afraid.

As for 2011, we will be well into the pit by then... I would not be making any assumptions about what will and won't be alive by then.

Yup. If these guys are to stay rich (most of them will) they need to be doing a lot more than parking it in passive, low return savings accounts (all of them will). Beanz and I have argued about specifics and aberrational forces elsewhere, but overall the days of inexpensive energy are gone, and the house of cards built by market manipulation and ever more completed and exotic financial "products" will fall, with heavy damage or destruction to many who deserve it, but also to many who trusted the "experts" to invest their pensions and savings wisely. The US will be hurt badly, as real inflation is much higher than the published figures (the gov't took all those annoyingly volatile products like energy out of the published figures a while back) and the short-sighted pumping of more and more money into the system only appears to help, and only if you look at the short-term effects. Long term, nearly everything will cost us more, and income for most people will not keep up. Elsewhere the effect will vary, but the pressure on the middle class will be universal (except maybe in China, which is nearly a world unto itself because of the size and development state of its economy).

Regardless of the formula or format, future AC viewer ratings might be undetectable in the US.

Hey Charlie, I look at it differently... basically the Fed corrupted the money supply simply by artificial oversupply. Once you do that you encourage all sorts of bad behavior that could not exist with out artificially cheap money. In my view the market should control money as it has done very successfully in the past. What you are witnessing is what happens when a distortion occurs at the very root of the system and you will find in the end the damage will tax everyone. Market players can and do behave badly but only when there is an enabler, in this case the Fed was that force. They have created massive moral hazard and fueled by cheap money and competition in the global finance industry has taken it to a ridiculous extreme. That unfortunately is human nature and in my mind why we should have never moved away from market dictated money to money created by nothing but government decree.

So in away I do think the market was manipulated but not in the way you are thinking. Its been manipulated from one of its pillars, the unit of exchange and what was once its store of value (rapidly depleting), its money. Corrupt that and everything above it is built on shaky foundations. Market players are subject to the forces of completion, for them to get away with manipulation in the broader markets for any length of time is very difficult. The Fed is monopoly, for them its dead simple.

    Anyway... off topic.

    Apologies.

Chuckie and MB... You have clearly wandered off the reservation with this crapola. My stock broker brother gives me more of this stuff than I can take, already.

I recognize the apology, MB and hope that your (collective) spewage is complete.

Now back to the ******* from SF and Schweiz.

    Your buddy, Chris

If you can't tie it to the thread... it's crap and belongs somewhere else.

But, then, I think you already covered that part of the disconnect.

Come on, Bubba... you and Charlie can wander on over to the WoodenBoat Forum Bilge section and spew about finances until your eyes bug out. I come here to read the boatdesign topics and clear my head of this style of reference.

How hard is it for you to just acknowledge that your take on this financial melange is just that... your take, and not everyone holds your learned opinion. For every opinion that you hold dear, there are, literally, thousands who see it differently.

Me, personally, I'd like to see it left off these pages so I can flounder in my own lack of information with boat dreams in my head.

Thanks so much for your consideration.

It was spawned from the idea that the ability to pay for these massive campaigns is probably going to be severely curtailed over the coming years. That was the connection, it went a little far but conversations are allowed to meander.

Please learn to modify your insulting tone when objecting. We may not be as far beneath you as you seem to think.

I started the $$ talk, I'll pull the plug if I want to.

If a brawl is going to break out, I'll deal with it.

I'm trying to cultivate some peeps here in multihulls without arguing with DL so when I start asking stupid questions about hot rodding a Hobie 18 I don't get jeered off the board. :D

That view of the the weirld explains a lot ... :)

I found out that only one was ever built, the original owner sold it in 2005 and it is still in the SF bay area ... :(

I'm toying with getting the study plans just to see the interior options ... but it makes much more sense to buy than to build ...

I checked out the Seacart link ... not quite what I'm looking for.

Back on topic ... what was the topic? Oh yeah 90x90 race multi's ...

90x90 is an odd size, 90x70 'fits' other big multis. I'm having a hard time finding a 'square' big boat.

We should know more tomorrow ... we may never see what BMWO is building ... there is a chance that SNG/Alinghi is going to forfeit.

Canoes? Two or more, to make 90x90? Please try to stay focused :)

Well it almost had to happen ...

Foncia (60ft Orma?) pitchpoled while being using by Alinghi to learn more about big trimarans that will probably be used in the next America's Cup.

Two minor injuries to people ... I have to think a major injury to Alinghi egos.

Rumor also has it that BMWO's 90x90 monster is out of the shop and in a tent for assembly ... possibly a second boat is in build?
