9.9 High Thrust variant outboards

    I notice the Yamaha appears to have the "best" credentials, with a bigger reduction gearcase, anyway, others appear to rely on lesser reduction, but maybe big diameter, 4 blade, low pitch propellers. What are people's preferences, brand-wise, amongst those with experience of them ? The intended use is trolling and as an auxiliary on a 20 foot boat.

    I have a Suzuki 9.9 high thrust with electric start and an alternator for charging the battery. Its a fuel injected engine and so far (had it 2 years) it has been extremely reliable. It is great at trolling. This is on a 1972 18 foot Sea Ray with a mercruiser 165. The boat weighs well over 2000lb. But this engine has no problem moving it. The o/b saved us a year and half ago when the sterndrive died (lost all lubrication, but what the heck it was 48 years old.) Anyway the engine is no speed demon but it has lots of torque, can throttle down to about 2 knots at idle, and I towed a boat that had broken down with it, Prior to this I had a Mercury 4 hp with regular gearing and regular prop, (a tohatsu engine under the cover) and it was ok for trolling but way too small for this boat. It was carbureted and needed annual carb cleaning to keep running right. It also was pull start and I'm getting to damn old to be pull starting engines.

    I looked at the Yamahas and they appear to be very good engines. I know people who have them and they really like them, but the deal I got on the Suzuki was too good to pass up. But if I hadn't gotten such a good deal I would probably have bought the Yamaha.

    Around here Yamahas out number all the competition combined by about 10-1, but the Suzuki has a lot to offer. None of them are bad though.

    I installed a Yamaha T9.9 on my small cruiser back in 2016. One of the best things I ever did. Added a Garmin autopilot the next season. That little outboard will push me along at 4 knots without straining. I also run it together with the main engine at speeds up to about 8 knots. I center my main rudder and the T9.9 takes care of the steering. I've crossed Lake Ontario this way, much more relaxing than being tied to the helm. I just change the fluids and keep it clean. I use it more than my main engine. Wonderful product and very practical. I'd recommend this engine to anyone who needs a trolling or wing engine. On a twenty footer? You'll love it. A photo is below. A word of warning though. Team the T9.9 with a Garmin Reactor Autopilot and you will never, ever go back to steering your rig all of the time.

    Thanks for those replies, it does seem the Yamaha has the most admirers.
