Living near "any" river ...

lots of evacuations here today. I'm good were I am but many people are not so lucky.

with everything going on my server seems quite slow today.
the authorities are saying the rivers will have crested in about 12 hours.
its amazing just how quickly something like this happens.

we are very lucky though that there has been no report of injuries or casualties. Life along any river carries these risks.

 

a couple pics. they say the worst should be over and hopefully the water should
start to recede over the next 3 days. It's gonna be a heck of a clean up.
unfortunatly the flood water will continue south.

 

I heard on the news in Seattle that all of down town Calgary has been evacuated. I have visited there several times, I do not remember the downtown being particularly low. does this happen very often? it appears the river breached its banks.

 

Sorry for the flood victims, may God bless them. I nearly lost my cousin when her house got washed away in Raccoon, Ky flood. I was in the Johnson County flood in 1957, the building I was in having been surrounded by flood waters.

The aftermath will pose its own perils, as evidenced in the USGS report. Gas utilities may be compromised, electrocutions are a risk. Everyone exposed will need typhoid shots. And the list goes on.

Apparently there was a flood here in 2005, I didn't live here then.
they are saying this is much worse. I don't believe this is common,
we have received a lot of rain in a short period of time lately. most of the water is actually from the mountains. still on in all, I still say we are kinda lucky and the people of this town generally have a good moral and community spirit.

when I started this thread my feeling was this is not an uncommon event.
hense the "any" river title. I was also in Winnipeg for a few floods, much flatter land there, but the city was well protected.
your so right regarding the aftermath, its now that we will truly find out the damages., I was thinking about the subway floods in New York and the electronics and so on of the downtown towers and such. we can only hope for the best. I think is the small towns south of us that have paid a much larger price regarding homes and casualties.

 

thought I would mention what you cant see in this your pic is that
there is a lower road underneath that bridge.

 

The floods in hilly country are always worse because the current is channeled into more rapid flowing and more forceful water.

Build up on strong pilings and use the ground level for sheltered outdoor space and trailer / car ports.

Floods do such and amazing amount of unseen damage,
ei:mold and electrical problems just to name a couple.

Vermin seeking high ground are a health risk.
I don't know if you have a problem with poisonous snakes up north but when it floods they take to the porches down south.

I'm sooo thankful we don't have boa's running around in our water,
or anything like that. we were lucky here as far as our drinking water goes,
but some places not far south are still on a "boil" water mandate. I think part of that is do to the deceased animals that come with the flooding.

I can't imagine how scary it would be to be waste high in crocs, alligator or snake infested waters!
